These studies compared groups of children who regularly took omega-3 supplements to other groups of children who took a placebo.
One clinical study, which entailed the evaluation of mental performance for children who took the supplement or placebo for at least three months, demonstrated enhanced language development for the children who consumed the supplement [7]. These types of studies also showed that the children who took the omega-3 supplement improved in terms of spelling ability, social responsiveness, overall behavior, and reading level [7-10].
Furthermore, children with emotional and developmental difficulties who started taking omega-3 supplements regularly experienced reduced levels of lethargy and begin to increase their use of gestures [7, 8].
Based on these findings, omega-3 fatty acids were deemed as beneficial nutrients that help children who are experiencing educational problems and issues such as hyperactivity [7-12]. Overall, maintaining sufficient levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the brain is critical toward addressing various types of neurocognitive issues.
